Topic:3.Many people use distance-learning programmes (study material post, TV, Internet, etc.) to study at home, but some people think that it cannot bring the benefit as much as attending college or university. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this opinion?

Summary: I personally argue that studying at home cannot be beneficial to students as attending schools.First of all, distance learning lacks of direct interaction among students. Another shortcoming of distance-learning model is the dependence on technology.

With the remarkable advancement of technology, one of the most conspicuous trends of 21st century is the increasing prevalence of distance-learning programs. In spite of being a significant alternative to traditional education, whether this state-of-the-art method of learning can achieve the same effect as the formal form of university education at which students go to university in person is genuinely open to discussion. I personally argue that studying at home cannot be beneficial to students as attending schools.

First of all, distance learning lacks of direct interaction among students. A traditional class, with the discipline and supervision of lecturers, offers learners a multitude of interaction-required activities such as presentations, seminars, group assignments, and many more activities through which students gradually enhance their social skills and expand their hands-on experiences. However, interaction while studying via the Internet, just occurs between students and a handful of cyber friends, most of whom they never meet in the real life. Distance-learning students thus might be at a disadvantage in improving their communication skills and widening their relationship.

Another shortcoming of distance-learning model is the dependence on technology. Media has a myriad of contents likely diverting students’ attention from their study. For instance social media and electronic games are so inviting to most young learners that they might spend much of their time on these distractions. Studying at home via the Internet, as a result, is only suitable for students with extremely high degree of maturity and commitment.

According to the above-mentioned weaknesses, under no circumstances can distance learning be taken as a qualified substitute for traditional methods.
