Question: Summarize the points made in the lecture, being sure to explain how they challenge the specific theories presented in the reading passage.
There are three possible answers given to explain why the sailors in Russian submarines patrolling the North and Arctic Ocrean would occasionally hear strange floglike sound.

The first possibility is sound emitted by male and female ocra whales. As stated in the reading paragragh. The sound of the ocra whale is similar to the sound of submarines. But it is not likely to be the answer, since ocra whales live near the surface of the ocean and submarines are deep in the ocrean. The submarines are not able to hear sound which is far from it and is originated from the ocrean surface. Even if the submarines do hear the sound, they did not detect anything, while the whales should be able to be detected.

The second possible answer given is giant squid. Giant squids are intelligent animals, thus thought to be able to emit the sound. However, the sound was only detected since 1960s and the following two decades. It disappeared afterwords. The giant squid still exists. So this possibility cannot explain the sudden disappearance of the sound.

The third possibility is that the sound is from submarines of other countries. But the sound moved around and changed direction quickly. This cannot be achieved by machines like submarines. Furthermore, the submarines cannot eliminate the noise of their engines. The technique at the time also cannot make them fast and slient. These situations make it impossible to be a cause of the sound.

Though the reading paragragh presented some possibilities to be the cause, the lecture used several evidences and facts to overthrow those speculations.

Question:
Do you agree or disagree with the following statement?
Because the world is changing so quickly, people now are less happy or less satisfied with their lives than people were in the past.
Use specific reasons and examples to support your answer.
I don\'t totally agree with the statement that people nowadays are less satisfied with their lives than they were due to the rapid change of world.

Sometimes it is true that the world is changing so quickly that people find it a little bit hard to catch up. When the iphone was first presented to the world, some people found it hard to adapt to a cell phone without a keyboard. But this unadaptability was quickly disappeared years after. People find it more easier and comfortable to see texts, images and videos on the screen. The function introducing handwriting also benefits elderly people who find it hard to see the small letters on cell phones or people do not know how to type. This has changed our lifestyle greatly by making calling, communicating, viewing, or even buying more conveninently in our life. The technology gives us more abilities to do more things quickly and thus make our life happier and more efficient.

The changes in architecture also increase happiness in our life. As in the past, houses made by stones in Shanghai were typical residential housings for the locals. But the stones store heat in summer and cold in winter. Nowadays, with the change of materials in housings as well as the spacial distribution and arrangement, new housing types make our daily life more comfortable by maintaining suitable tempertatures during the year, enough natural sun light and ventilation. The technical improvement like air conditioners and modern designing digital assistance like BIM also improve our living condition. People are thus suffering less from nonideal living spaces.

The change from alienated connection to globalization of the world also provide with more sources to achieve happiness. People are now able to absorb information all over the world. This advance accelerates the exchange of knowledge which would help each country and nation to grow more rapidly. The international condition also boomed tourism, allowing people to travel around the world and experience what they haven\'t been experienced before. The relationship among different countries also make our economy thrive. The import and export allows people to access to a great variety of necessities in our life. To have the choice to pick the things we need most and to make our life more satisfying.

Therefore, even though the world is changing so quickly, it is chaning continuously towards a better situation. Our life would be greatly varied from before, but it also provide us with better technology, living conditions, essential objects and new acticities to make our life better.
