题目:Teachers were more appreciatedand valued by society in the past than they were nowadays.
Teacher is an indispensable occupation forthe society and its importance has actually changed to some degree as time goesby. In 30 or even longer years ago, “teacher” was the same word for “sacredauthority” and everyone admired and thought highly of the job. Now with thedevelopment of the technology and the perception change of the public, what theconcept of “teachers” is giving to people has probably shifted. Recently apiece of social news have perhaps stricken us: in China a 15-year-old middleschool student stabbed his teacher and eventually killed the teacher justbecause he was scolded for not behaving well in the classroom. I was astoundedhow a teacher was not only diminished but was also hated to death. Isn’t a “teacher”is supposed to be a student’s father or mother? Have anybody seen a personkilling his/her parents?
First and foremost, adolescent at presenthave got more of their own “personalities”. In the past, they were probablytaught to fear and revere their teachers and be humble, however, nowadays astudent can talk back to his/her teacher anytime as long as he/she feels theythemselves are right regardless of how much more education that their teachershave received. When I was a student, even if I “thought” my teacher saidsomething that I didn’t completely agree with, I would not argue back, nomatter out of respect or that I was aware that I could be wrong, too.Admittedly, it is good that a student is thinking critically, but a lot of timeI don’t see many valuable thoughts of fresh aspects but just some kids who wantto demonstrate that they are more innovative than their teachers. On one hand, theirconfidence comes from their families. In China, ever since 1979, there has beena mandatory “one child policy” (which is gradually relaxed to two under somespecial circumstances) for most of the families, and its consequence is that childrenand teenagers in this generation are getting more attention than the generationbefore and some of them are kind of spoiled because they are the only child intheir family. Therefore children are more tolerated by their parents thanbefore and their parents are more willing to praise their children even iftheir children are not always doing the right thing, for example, not respectingtheir teachers. Instead of telling their children to be unpretentious andmodest, the parents are encouraging their children to challenge their teachersand see it as the equivalence of being smart.
Secondly, the advancement of technology, especially the internet has affected the importance or necessity of teacher thejob. In the past, except from books in the book store or library, if we wantedto know the answer to an academic problem, the first person we would seek foris our teacher; now everything has changed: we have Wikipedia and Quora, to getto know a number of things by a click of the search button without bothering toask a teacher or professor unless it is some more complicated question. Thishas put teachers into a very embarrassing situation where their authoritativeposition has been shaken and their function has partially been replaced bymachines. Not to mention there are many free or charged online courses in a lotof subjects and areas, teachers, except from those university professors whoare temporarily irreplaceable, now seem to belong to service industry ratherthan educational profession. If teachers have become more like common servicestaff instead of someone that students have natural reverence for, then it’swould be too hard to understand that teachers are not that respected as theywere used to, at least not as much as Confucius was. Granted, some may arguethat it is because some of the educators are not qualified to be called “master”that teachers today are not valued and respected as before, however, I can onlysay that this is only partially true because with the growing demand forteachers, more people have become teachers, but that is not to say that their capacityis inferior to teachers in the past. On the contrary, the overall ability ofteachers in today is becoming better because of the overall higher educationpeople are receiving, more masters or even PhD have chosen be teachers. In thepast, perhaps it is adequately enough for a high school graduate to teachprimary school students.
Last but not least, teacher is not anoccupation that pays well. In today’s China, people are quite money-oriented: theyare comparing with each other’s apartment, cars or who have more money, young peopleare dreaming of owning luxuries like the celebrities, and rich people are muchmore admired than intellectual or professionals. Therefore it won’t be astonishmentthat teachers are not as much valued as they were in the past because of amainstream value transformation. Twenty or fifteen years ago if you ask a childwhat he/she would like to be when they grow up, most of their answers wouldprobably be scientists and teachers. Nevertheless, students now tend to pursue jobsthat can make the more fortune, for example, a businessman, a movie star or anInternet celebrity (people who make money for being a famous YouTuber or aInstagrammer). If the students don’t want to be teachers when they becomeadults, how can this job be highly valued and appreciated?
To sum up, although teacher is still a quitemodest occupation, because the students now are mostly the only child in theirfamily and being rebellious; also, teachers’ function can be partially substitutedby advanced technology, not to mention that the whole society is looking moreinto fortune rather than knowledge itself, the tendency that teachers today areless valued and appreciated is easy to anticipate.
