Q: Imagine that you are in a classroom or a meeting. The teacher or the meeting leader says something incorrect. In your opinion, which of the following is the best thing to do? 1. Interrupt and correct the mistake right away; 2. Wait until the class or meeting is over and the people are gone, and then talk to the teacher or meeting leader; 3. Say nothing.

A:

During the meeting or a course, it is really common to notice some minor mistake made by the speaker or teacher. Personally speaking, I will wait until the class or meeting is over and talk to the lecturer or meeting leader in private about the error in the presentation.

First of all, It is not polite to point out a mistake of others in public. Imagine that when I am the one on stage and presenting my ideas about certain topics. If someone points out my mistake directly during the presentation, I would feel embarrassed and offended, especially when the fault was little and did not affect the main point of mine. For example, when the president of my country is delivering her policy on education a few months ago, some oral mistakes were given and one of the reporters corrected her immediately and rudely. Our president was fury and asked the reporter out for the reason that she was not properly mannered.

Secondly, People tend to forget the material they are presenting when the delivery is interrupted accidentally that result in inefficiently meeting or lecture. When a presentation is stopped by someone just because they feel like something is wrong about the content, the lecturer will stop and try to figure out what just happened and find a way to solve the blender right on the stage. This can easily cause the lecturer to forget what problem does he or she is currently addressing or explaining and it usually takes some time for the speaker to remember where he or she dropped off earlier. Not only it is lack of efficiency and also a great chance that there will be some point of view were forgotten to be made owing to the disturb from correction.

Admittedly, since no one enjoys being corrected, some might claim that saying nothing is the better way to behave manner. It might be a better way when the mistake is too small to do any adverse effect to the main point. However, if the error is content-related and might cause others to falsely understand the topic or cause some other students learn the wrong conclusions of the speaking, isn't the responsibility on us that the mistake should be corrected and delivered to all the listeners, making sure they realize the truth correctly? After all, the point of having a presentation or lecture is to spread the correct knowledge. Being a participant is also responsible for this mission.
