Question: Summarise the points made in the lecture, being sure to explain how they cast doubt on specific points made in the reading passage.

In the article, the author states three reasons for the humpack whales to be navigating by stars, but the lecturer disagrees with the evidence in the article by the following reasons.

First of all, the lecturer points out that the humpack whale\'s intelligence does not seem that connected with their navigation by stars. While in the article the author believes that humpack whales have enough intelligence to help them navigate by stars, because their cognitive ability provides a sound basis for their ability to use the complex system of sensory stimuli like stars for navigation. However, the lecturer says that some birds, like ducks, also use stars to navigate, but their cognitive ability is just average. Their navigation ability using stars is just an ability gained  through evolution. The humpack whales just happen to be intelligent, and their intelligence is not connected with their navigation system. The evidence provided in the article that whale\'s brain power far exceeds that of most animals makes the whales  able to navigate with stars is not that convincing according to the lecture.

Secondly, the lecturer says that humpack whales\' travelling in straight lines might be because they are using the earth\'s magnetic field to navigate but not stars, as the article points out.  According to the lecture, there is a bio-magnetide in their brains that makes the whales sensitive to the earth\'s magnetic field, which makes the whales being oriented by the magnetic field. This disagrees with the assumption in the article that humpack whales migrate in straight lines because they do not have any land features to rely on in the ocean to navigate, so that they could only rely on the stars.

Finally, the lecturere says that the humpack whales\' spy-hoppying habit has nothing to do with looking at the stars, because some sharks also have the habit of spy-hopping, but they are only looking for animals to hunt by doing this. This disagrees with the assumption in the article that humpack whales look upward and make their heads above water to look at stars to navigate. Last but not least, humpack whales migrate in the day time, when stars are invisible, so that it is impossible for them to rely on stars to navigate as the article believes.

To conclude, the lecturer believes that humpack whales\' navigating by stars might be a fascinating theory, but the three reasons given in the article is not that convincing enough to be evidences supporting the theory.

Do you agree or disagree with the following statement?
The ability to maintain friendships with a small number of people over a long period of time is more important for happiness than the ability to make many new friends easily.
Use specific reasons and examples to support your answer.

I totally agree with the idea that the ability to maintain friendships with a small number of people over a long period is more important for happiness than the ability to make many new friends easily.

First of all, when you have the ability to maintain friendships with a small number of people over a long time, you are also able to handle problems in the relationship and develop the friendship into a better direction. I have a friend since I was in primary school, and we keep in touch every year and meet with each other over time. Every time we hang out with each other, we are more happy than ever because we know each other\'s tastes and favorite things, and get each other\'s point when we talk about fun things. When we are unhappy with each other, we know immediately what is wrong between us and we apologize to each other quickly after problems occur. Because of the familiarity between us, we are able to find out interesting things which cater to both of us to do, and we talk to each other in a way that is comfortable for both of us. This helps us to gain happiness more easily, and helps us to develop our friendship to last longer and become stronger.

Secondly, as a saying goes, a friend in need is a friend in deed. While making   new friends easily helps a person to get to more people and have more relations, it is the true friends that help you when you are in real needs. Last year, my father came down with leukemia, and my old friends helped me so much that they are backing me up in the difficult times of my life. Although I was making a lot of new friends before then, those who helped me and encouraged me a lot were the old, best friends of mine. I found out that only a few best friends are true friends to me, and they could make me happy in the bluest days of my life. It is not hard to make as many new friends as I want, but it is really hard to turn a new friend into a true friend. True friends are those who bring you happiness when you cry, and do not give up on you when you lose.

Last but not least, while making many new friends is easy, losing these easily-made friends is also a sad thing in life. I took part in many student activities in my school, and during these weekend-long activities, we were really gaining a lot of laughters and happiness during that time. After the events ended, a lot of people just disappeared in my life, and we never contact each other again after. However, my old friends are very happy to hang out with me, and whenever I need them, they are always by my side. I can get in touch with my old friends easily, and we can travel with each other and make fun of each other, but it is really hard for the new friendships to maintain long if you are making many new friends at the same time. It takes time and effort to maintain a friendship, and it also takes time to recover from the loss of a friend. While a few old friends is enough to keep my life happy, the lost of the newly made friends is also disappointing for me.

As a result, I think the ability of maintaining friendships with a few people is no doubt more important for happiness.
